We have a choir of seventeen singers going to Ely this coming weekend (July 19-20) to sing Saturday Evensong and Sunday Eucharist and Evensong. This will be our first English cathedral visit since 2021 (sadly we never made it to Westminster Abbey last year as it turns out another choir was also booked for that weekend) so we’re really looking forward to it.
The programme includes Rose Preces and Responses, Leighton Magdalen Service (Saturday) Balfour Gardiner Evening Hymn (Saturday), Clive Osgood’s Canticles and Stephanie Martin Hear my prayer (Sunday). At Sunday Eucharist we’re singing Victoria Missa O Quam Gloriosum and Osgood Ave Verum.
We absolutely delighted to welcome back Clive Osgood who will play the organ for the services, and as you can see we’re singing two of his compositions. One of the Lewes Singers’ original bass members, Clive has gone on to a fabulous career as a composer and we love singing his pieces.
It’s a shame we’re not allowed to sing Nick’s brilliant Preces & Responses, which we’ve sung on all our cathedral visits in England and abroad, but I guess cathedrals have had their fingers burnt in the past and are these days a lot more restrictive. We shall however be singing most of the psalms to his chants, probably unaccompanied for added drama (or intimacy, however you wish to look at it.)
If you can’t get to Ely but want to hear us or take part in the services, they will be livestreamed here on Ely Cathedral’s YouTube channel.
